Canberra attractions

Canberra is the capital and largest inland city of Australia and a paradise for cognoscente and those who are fond of history. The National Gallery of Australia and the Australian War Memorial are the major highlights in Canberra.

Canberra has many great attractions and people from all over the world come to explore them. Among these places are Questacon, Australian National Botanic Garden, Parliament House and more.

Australian War Memorial

The Australian War Memorial is a free attraction in Canberra where you will learn about the history Australian soldiers and weapons from World. If you go there, you will find an array of tanks and planes, with information provided by their museum. There is also a Wall of Remembrance with the names of deceased soldiers listed on it, which is made of bronze panels that cover 100,000 people who died in World War.

National Gallery of Australia

National Gallery of Australia is a world-class establishment, on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin. In it, you can find international and South Asian art as well as paintings from Melanesia, Polynesia and traditional Aboriginal art.

The National Gallery of Australia is Australia’s largest art museum, exhibiting over 165,000 works of art. The Australian Aboriginal Memorial contains 190 painted tree trunks which represent the indigenous people that have died for their land.

National Museum of Australia

The National Museum of Australia interprets and preserves Australia’s social history. There are guided tours to discover, special exhibitions, and informative messages hidden in the building. It has a café, gift shop, and many more interesting features.

Australian National Botanic Gardens

The National Botanical Garden was established in 1970 and is located at the foot of Black Mountain and only place in the world where you can visit with one spot all of Australia’s beautiful arrays of native plants.

There are over 4200 native species of plants growing in these 35 hectares, which you will find nowhere else on earth. Daily walks are offered at 11 am, as well as souvenirs, books, and gift shops. The Pollen Cafe offers spectacular foods with views of the surrounding areas.

Questacon

Questacon is an interactive science communication facility that has been open since November 23, 1988. With cutting-edge technology and interactive displays, Questacon provides a space for fun science for all ages.

The goal of Questacon is to make science interesting, fun, and to spread awareness of the value of science and technology.

New and Old Parliament House

There is a new Parliament House in Canberra. It was built to replace the Old Parliament House, and we visited the New Parliament House to feel Australia’s democracy in action. We took a guided tour of parliament house and learned about our history and the building. My dad took a moment to see parliament sitting from the gallery, and had an amazing view of the Parliament House as well.

A short distance from the New Parliament House, is the Old Parliament. This building is now the Museum of Australian Democracy, celebrating the history of Australian democracy and politics.

Mount Ainslie Lookout and Nature Reserve

You can enjoy breathtaking views of Canberra and its buildings from the summit of Mount Ainslie, which is 10 minutes’ drive from the central CBD. Hikers are recommended to take trails behind the Australian War Memorial, where they might spot native birds and wildlife along the way.

Lake Burley Griffin

Lake Burley Griffin is named after an American architect, Walter Burley Griffin. He’s the one who designed Canberra. Its centrepiece is in the middle of Canberra with lots of attractions and national institutions near it.

There are many activities to do around Lake Burley Griffin: picnics, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and more., the surrounding cafes and restaurants offer an opportunity to relax.

Black Mountain Tower/ Black Mountain Nature Park

Black Mountain is a hidden gem and is found a short drive from the CBD of Canberra. The park has marked trails for those looking for walking opportunities, winding paths through native plants, and an observation deck that offers stunning views of the city and surroundings from the tower.

This place has more than 450 plant species and 100 bird species. You can see reptiles or have the chance of encountering kangaroos in the bush.

Namadgi National Park

For those looking for a remote wilderness experience and to explore some of the most scenic spots in Australia, Namadgi National Park is around 45 minutes’ drive from Canberra city. Visitors will enjoy camping in Namadgi National Park as well as walking 160 kilometres of marked tracks looking at Aboriginal heritage in the area’s natural landscapes.

Old Bus Depot Market

The Old Bus Depot Market began in 1992 and today, it still operates every Sunday. The building has been converted into 200 stalls which sell clothing, handcrafted jewellery, Australian eco-friendly woodware, and handmade work.

National Zoo and Aquarium

The National Zoo and Aquarium is a privately owned 25-hectare area devoted to animals. It features the largest saltwater tank in Australia, as well as the opportunity to handfeed a white lion, bear, hyena, and tiger. Visitors can also walk with cheetahs and have encounters with many other exotic animals at the facility.

The National Carillon and National Library of Australia

The National Carillon, a 57-bell tower on Lake Burley Griffin was offered as a gift from the British Government to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Canberra as the National Capital.

Australia’s largest library is the National Library, especially a place where you can find and learn about Australian stories.

Cockington Green Gardens is a privately owned extremely beautiful miniature garden.
